DELAND — Cortez “Corky” Tedder Dannals, 91, died peacefully March 15, 2017. A memorial service celebrating Corky’s life will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 31, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand.
Corky was born Oct. 31, 1925, in DeLand, and lived there until her graduation from Stetson University, where she played several instruments in band and orchestra.
After working as a chemist in Mulberry for a year, she married George Dannals in June 1947. They lived in Durham, North Carolina, while George attended the Duke University Engineering School.
Corky worked as a lab technician at Duke Hospital until their first child was born in June 1948.
During several moves throughout the Southeast and the birth of three more children, Corky enjoyed being a full-time wife and mother.
The family settled in the Orlando area in 1954, where they lived, except for a two-year move to northern Virginia, until George and Corky returned to DeLand in 1981.
In addition to being a full-time homemaker, Corky, a gifted musician and singer, was an organist and choir director, singing in the choirs of several churches they attended over the years, primarily Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Orlando and St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand.
She was a citrus-grower, as was her father, at the family farm in north Volusia County.
Corky was also involved in church life in many capacities, including vestry as the first female senior warden, the junior-high ministry, the Altar Guild, and the women of the church.
Along with George, Corky was actively involved in Young Life, both on a local and national level, and Habitat for Humanity.
She also enjoyed gardening, serving on committees for Stetson University, and spending time with family and friends.
She has been described as loving, caring, feisty and generous.
Corky was preceded in death in June 2008 by her husband and the love of her life, George. She is survived by her four children, Nancy Swindell (Jimmy), Ed Pratt-Dannals (Joanne), Jim Dannals (Carolyn) and Bob Dannals (Valerie); her grandchildren, Jason Swindell, Claire Swindell, Matt Dannals, Luke Dannals, Josh (Sarah) Dannals, Chris (Sarah) Dannals, Kate (Patrick) Martin, Danielle (John) Burgett, Kaleigh (Neel) Desai and Mary Blair Dannals; seven great-grandchildren, with one more due in April; niece Barbara Furlong (Bill); great-nephews Rob and Mike Furlong; and the Hough cousins.
